The Power of Yet: A Simple Word That Transforms Your Mindset
We’ve all been there — facing a challenge that feels impossible, hitting a roadblock, or doubting our abilities. When frustration creeps in, it’s easy to say, “I can’t do this.” But what if one small word could change everything?
🚀 Try saying instead: “I can’t do this… YET.”
This tiny shift in language has a profound effect on the brain, reinforcing resilience, disrupting negative thought patterns, and encouraging perseverance.
My Personal “Yet” Moment
A while ago, when I joined the gym, I struggled to lift any weight using single legs on the leg extension machine. Partly due to an old knee injury, my right leg just wouldn’t cooperate. It would have been easy to say, “I can’t do this” and walk away.
But instead, I told myself, “I can’t do this YET.”
That one word made all the difference. I kept practising, gradually building strength and confidence. Over time, I not only managed to lift weights but also increased both the weight and the reps — something that once felt impossible!
This experience reminded me of just how powerful the right mindset can be. When you believe in your ability to improve, you unlock a whole new level of growth.
Why “Yet” is So Powerful
Adding yet reminds your mind that progress is always possible. Instead of a fixed limitation, it reframes the challenge as part of a journey — one where growth, learning, and improvement are inevitable.
🔹 “I don’t understand this… YET.”
🔹 “I’m not confident speaking in public… YET.”
🔹 “I haven’t reached my goal… YET.”
This mindset shift is rooted in the growth mindset, a concept popularised by psychologist Carol Dweck. It’s the belief that abilities and intelligence are not fixed but can be developed through effort, learning, and persistence.
How “Yet” Rewires Your Brain
Your words shape your thoughts, and your thoughts influence your actions. By changing how you talk to yourself, you literally rewire your brain.
✔️ Increases Motivation – Instead of giving up, you recognise that success is just a matter of time and effort.
✔️ Builds Confidence – You start believing in your ability to improve, even if progress feels slow.
✔️ Encourages Action – When you believe you can grow, you’re more likely to seek out solutions and keep going.
How to Use “Yet” in Your Daily Life
1️⃣ Catch Yourself – Notice when you’re using limiting language (“I can’t,” “I’m bad at this,” “I’ll never”).
2️⃣ Add “Yet” – Shift your statement (“I can’t do this YET”).
3️⃣ Back It Up – Ask yourself, “What small step can I take to get closer?”
This small but mighty word has the power to transform setbacks into stepping stones.
