Hypnosis is a state of mind similar to experiencing a pleasant daydream. It is a natural, highly focussed state of mind in which the unconscious mind is free to act without interference from regular consciousness. In this relaxed state of consciousness, your hypnotherapist can guide you to make changes in your behaviour and habits. You cannot be forced to make any changes against your will.
Everyone goes into a hypnotic state many times a day. For example when you are watching a really good film that has absorbed your attention, and you look at the time and think wow where did the last hour and a half go? Or when you have driven your car along a well-travelled journey and you reach your destination, and you are surprised at how quick the journey seemed. You may have no conscious recollection of making any of the turns or any of the manoeuvres in the last ten miles of the road that you took. And yet you got to your destination safely.
Every time your attention is focussed intently on something you are doing or you go into autopilot, you have gone into a hypnotic trance. Your unconscious mind carried on automatically keeping you safe whilst your conscious mind was engaged with daydreaming about the next meeting, your next holiday, or what you’ll be doing when you get home.

Contrary to how hypnosis is portrayed in films and TV, the hypnotherapist does not control your behaviour. You remain in control and it is your choice whether to follow the suggestions, guided imagery and experiences being suggested. Even a stage hypnotist chooses willing volunteers for the purpose of entertainment. In hypnotherapy, your hypnotherapist acts as a facilitator or coach to help guide you to make the changes you want to make. Hypnosis makes it easier for people to experience therapeutic suggestions; however, it does not force you to have those experiences and it remains your choice whether to follow the suggestions or not.
People in a hypnotic trance may look like they are asleep, however, really you are just in a very relaxed state, almost like daydreaming on purpose, as you concentrate on the suggestions and images suggested by your hypnotherapist.
