From Desperation to Transformation: How Hypnotherapy Changed My Life (And Can Change Yours Too)
Vulnerability creates connection. When I became a hypnotherapist, it wasn’t just a career choice — it was personal.
I never expected to say that hypnotherapy changed my life, but my journey into hypnotherapy began in 2009 when my husband, Neil, had a life-changing accident that left him in chronic pain. At the time, I had no idea that this search for pain relief would ultimately lead me to my true calling.
The Struggle: Living with Chronic Pain
Neil was cycling home from work when he was hit by a car. Though he was able to walk home, pain soon crept into his right arm and hand. Eventually, we discovered that a crushed piece of bone at the base of his neck was pressing on a nerve. The prognosis was devastating — surgery was too dangerous. The risk of paralysis in all four limbs was too high, leaving pain management as his only option.
The pain was relentless. He lost the use of his right arm and hand and was plagued by severe headaches. The prescribed medication dulled the pain, but it also dulled him. Each increase in dosage seemed to erase more of the man I knew — until I was living with a version of Neil who could barely function. He was dizzy, drowsy, unable to walk in a straight line. It felt like I was married to a zombie.
But Neil wanted his life back. He wanted to ride his motorbike again. He wanted to travel. Even short car journeys were excruciating, and I couldn’t stand by and watch him suffer.
Discovering Hypnotherapy
Desperate for answers, I turned to Google and found studies showing that hypnotherapy could help with pain management. At the time, online sessions weren’t a thing, and Neil was unable to travel for treatment. So, I decided to learn hypnosis myself.
The first time I guided Neil through hypnosis, his pain level — previously a 10 out of 10 — dropped to a 3. It felt like magic. But it wasn’t. It was the power of the mind.
With just a few weeks of practice, Neil was ready to reduce his medication. Under medical supervision, he reduced his long-term painkillers. His balance returned. The fog lifted. He was able to do more, and eventually, he met his goal of riding a motorbike again. Travel became possible. Life opened up once more.
And that’s when I realised: this wasn’t just about Neil. Hypnotherapy had the power to change lives.
How Hypnotherapy Changed My Life and led to a Career in Helping Others
My fascination with how the mind works grew. At the time, I was working in Human Resources, and I realised that many of the same techniques that helped Neil with pain could also help people with stress and anxiety. I started seeing clients part-time, learning, refining, and deepening my skills.
When Neil needed surgery in 2016, I decided to leave my HR job and focus on my hypnotherapy business full-time. It wasn’t an easy decision. I had already tried running a business in 2012 as a crystal and sound therapist, but back then, I didn’t know how to make it work.
This time, things were different. I had the right mindset. I understood marketing. And most importantly, I knew firsthand how powerful hypnotherapy could be.
Lessons from the Journey
Building a business takes time. It’s not always linear. I tried different marketing approaches —some worked, some didn’t. But I kept going.
One thing that never changed was my commitment to client care. I built my business on referrals, word-of-mouth recommendations, and 5-star testimonials. My mission became clear: to make taking care of your mental health as normal as eating healthily or exercising.
Over the years, I expanded my skill set — adding mindfulness, EFT, NLP, and Havening to my toolkit.
Eventually, I created my own Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy, designed to train others to become confident, ethical, and successful hypnotherapists. Teaching this course has made me a better therapist, helping me refine why I do what I do and how I do it.
