When we think about our mind, we tend to think of our conscious mind and our subconscious mind.

Your conscious mind is the part of your mind that you’re thinking with right now. The conscious part of your mind is logical and analytical.

Everything below that is your subconscious mind.

The subconscious part contains all the memories of everything you’ve ever done, seen, heard, felt and thought in your life, as well as running the body and keeping you safe. It controls your automatic behaviour – like how you feel when people say certain things to you – or how, once you learn to read or write or ride a bike, you can do it without even thinking about it. Yet in the beginning, when you were learning to do these things you had to think about it with your conscious mind. Through repetition, you were able to build new habits and programme your subconscious mind.

Remember when you first learnt to drive a car? Remember how difficult it was to coordinate mirror, signal, manoeuvre? Changing gear and don’t even mention parallel parking? Yet as you practised your sub-conscious learnt. Then after a while, you were able to jump and in the car and just drive, without even thinking about it consciously. You have programmed your subconscious mind.

Your subconscious mind is just like a supercomputer and your conscious mind is the computer programmer. What you think about consciously is programmed into your subconscious.

The conscious mind is meant to be the computer programmer and master of the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is meant to be the servant of the conscious mind. However, most people do not understand this and let their subconscious mind run them. When this happens, people become victims and start having a lot of problems.

The subconscious mind was never meant to direct your life. Like a computer, it runs programmes behind the scenes, but it needs a programmer to make sure it is running the right programmes, otherwise, it will run you into oblivion if you let it, not because it is bad, but because it has no reasoning. Why would you let a non-reasoning mind run your life? Yet this is what most people do.

Your conscious mind acts the gatekeeper. The idea is that every time a thought, feeling, or impulse arises out of the subconscious mind, it should be checked. When a thought or feeling or impulse arises, it is the job of the conscious mind to use its powers of reasoning, discernment and discrimination to check that thought at the gate. If the thought or impulse is positive, you let it into your mind. If it is negative, you push it out.

A healthy mind has good healthy thoughts. When you become aware of a negative thought or feeling or impulse, change your focus by focussing your attention on your breath, or a positive thought or affirmation. By changing your focus and attention, you stop giving energy to the negative thought, feeling or impulse. Just like a plant that you no longer water. Without water, the plant will eventually wither and die. By changing your attention and focus, the negative thought will eventually wither and be replaced with a positive thought or affirmation.

By focussing and affirming on your new positive thought, your subconscious mind will start to form a new habit. Your subconscious mind learns quickly. Most new habits can be formed within twenty-one days.

Start building your new habits now and become the Programmer of your mind.
